Round 3 of the CSCC Tin Tops series took place at a very sunny and hot Silverstone at the end of May. We were hoping that our times would improve over last years now that we had the Kaaz LSD fitted, which helped to pull the car through corners much better than the previous LSD we had.
We had done a few modifications to the car since Brands Hatch with lexan front windows and lighter doors that we hoped would help our times come down with an improved power to weight ratio. A total of 26 cars lined up for qualifying, 14 of which were Class A 2 litre cars, so it was going to be tough to qualify high up the grid, but the little puma performed well and we managed to secure 12th place. I had taken 2.46 seconds of my previous best time there and Toby had also gone 1.79 quicker than his personal best, so the car (and drivers) had showed an improvement!
I lined up on the grid for the start next to another Class C competitor, Kester Cook, in his Fiesta Cup. I had too much wheel spin at the start, and as a result lost a few places to a couple of Class A cars. I managed to chase them down and take back the places before my scheduled pit stop after 20 mins. Toby jumped in the car and rejoined in around 13th position. The CRX of Hancock/Spencer were comfortably leading the class until they had brake disc/caliper failure about 6 laps from the end which saw them visit the pits. This moved us up to 2nd in class and, with a few overtakes by Toby, took us to 10th overall. He was sitting comfortably in 10th with about a 20 second gap to the car behind when all of a sudden he spun on some oil which had been put down at Luffield. This dropped him right back into the clutches of the car behind, with only half a second between them for the last few laps. Toby managed to hold him off in the closing stages to finish us 10th overall and 2nd in Class.
We were pretty pleased with the result and I had managed to take another second off my qualifying time, so a total of 3.5 off last year’s personal best and also taking the fastest lap between myself and Toby in the race, something that has never happened before! We’ve got a few more modifications to do to the car before the next round in the CSCC Interseries Race at Spa Francorchamps, so hopefully be looking for a class win soon!
