Jack Harvey: Pre-season testing & training
This year I am competing in the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series for the Carlin team. It is a big step up from the Formula BMW European Championship that I finished runner up in last year, but I’m really looking forward to the challenge!
This winter has definitely been the busiest winter of my racing career. Once it was confirmed that I would be racing with Carlin in British F3 we got straight into testing over the winter months. I’ve also spent a lot of time with the team at the factory, getting to know everyone involved. It’s really important to me that I have a great relationship with everyone I work with both on and off the track.
I was a finalist for the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award so in November I took part in the assessment day for this award which saw me driving an F2 and a DTM car. I went along to the Autosport Awards in December where it was announced that Lewis Williamson had won the award. It was disappointing not to have won but it was still a great honour to have been nominated.
I’ve been spending a lot of my time over the winter on my training. I have been on two training camps organised by the MSA Team UK. The first was up at Silverstone which consisted of a three hour fitness test at the Porsche Performance Centre, lectures and team building exercises. The second was a ‘bootcamp’ style training camp in Surrey which was designed to push us both mentally and physically. We had to survive on little more than six hours sleep during the 48 hour camp and do a mix of endurance and strength fitness activities so it was certainly challenging!
I have also been on a training programme organised by the BRDC as part of the Superstars programme that I am part of. It was at RAF Cranwell and we had to take part in problem solving, aptitude tests and fitness tests that are usually done by the RAF fighter pilots!
When I wasn’t at these training camps I have been in the gym each day working on my general fitness levels so that I could be in the best shape I could when the testing kicked off.
We’ve now done two of this season’s British F3 tests – one at Rockingham and one at Silverstone. Both tests have gone really well and I was able to see a steady improvement in our progress over the course of the tests. We finished the second test in third position which, considering I am one of the few rookies in British F3 this year, I was really happy with.
We now have another three tests coming up before we head to Monza for the first race of the season. It’s been a long winter and I can’t wait to be back racing again!
